This map of Yosemite National Park, CA (number 206) at 1:80,000 & 1:40,000 from National Geographic is one of the Trails Illustrated outdoor recreation maps to America's National Parks and National Recreation Areas. Long-established as leading wilderness and backcountry activity maps, these tough waterproof and rip-proof maps are available for protected and public lands across the US.

Trails are clearly marked for various activities (principally walking and hiking, but also cycling and skiing where appropriate, and occasionally vehicle routs for off-road vehicles). Symbols mark useful visitor facilities, ranger stations, viewpoints, sights, access points, campsites, and site for outdoor activities like fishing and boating. Roads and towns (sometimes even main streets, depending on map scale) are shown, with seasonal restrictions, obstructions etc marked.

Each map has text by the sides or on the reverse giving general visitor information (including safety and regulations), as well as background information specific to the area – such as history, geology, top activities and outdoor sports, wildlife and natural history, and give detailed ‘Leave No Trace’ advice on low-impact enjoyment of these special areas. Most maps give a chart comparing trail distances.

The cartography is nothing short of stunning, combining detailed USGS topographic survey data with National Geographic’s much-loved relief-shaded cartographic style. Maps in these series come at a variety of scales, but generally contours are shown at 100 or 50 feet intervals. Colouring indicates land use/type (forest-cover, desert, private land, specially-protected research areas etc). Very clear coloured boundary highlighting shows the edges of different national parks, state parks, recreation zones, no-campfire zones etc.

Most maps have GPS-compatible UTM grids and margin ticks, with additional ticks for latitude/longitude at major intervals.

Coverage includes Stanislaus National Forest, Emigrant Wilderness, Carson Iceberg Wilderness, Toiyabe National Forest, Hoover Wilderness, Inyo National Forst, Yosemite Wilderness, Sierra National Forest, Ansel Adams Wilderness. Detail on Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows.
